Before you begin, fill out Step 1 on the W-4 form with your personal information. Then begin the process by answering the first question below.

Does your spouse work?
How many jobs do you and your spouse work at the same time? For example, if you work 2 jobs and your spouse works 1 job, you would select "3 or more jobs".

How to use the W-4 Calculator Software Program:

Answer the prompts about the job status and income for you and your spouse, if you have one. Include dependents, if any. Throughout the series of questions, complete the lines on the W-4 as prompted.

Do not use this tool if:

  • You are collecting a pension but not a job.
  • You have nonresident alien status.
  • You receive multiple sources of considerable income besides employment.

Filing Status Definitions:

  • Qualifying surviving spouse: Filing a joint return with the deceased spouse for the year of his or her death.
  • Head of Household: Unmarried and have one or more dependents. The head of household status can claim a roughly 50% larger standard deduction than single filers.

Here’s what you will need to have available to use this tool:

  • Blank W-4 form and pen
  • Basic Information (contact info)
  • Social security number
  • Tax filing status
  • Latest paycheck stub(s) or total gross amount(s) from:
    1. Any jobs you’ve held in the current calendar year—but only if you work more than one job at the same time
    2. Any jobs your spouse has held in the current calendar year if you are married and filing jointly
  • Dependent info. Make sure you know how many dependents you can claim. If you have children, you must determine which parent will include them as dependents on their W-4 form. There will be taxes owed if you both include them.
